Webinar: Creating Safe Spaces for LGBTQIA+ Young People

SHINE SA’s Schools Education and Support Team in partnership with Minus18 have developed this interactive 90 minute webinar to allow educators and school-based staff to further explore ways in which they can support LGBTQIA+ young people at their site.

This webinar is suitable for South Australian school based educators who have already completed some basic learning in this area and are looking for a session to extend their knowledge, elaborate on ideas and collaborate with other South Australians passionate about wellbeing.

Course Outline

Minus18 is a national organisation who play a large role in supporting the safety and wellbeing of LGBTIQA+ young people. Minus18 and SHINE SA partnered earlier in 2020 to provide a basic introductory webinar on how schools can become safer spaces for their diverse young people. This interactive webinar aims to build on previous learnings and allow participants to share experiences, learn from each other and consider practical strategies they could use at their specific school site.

The course will be facilitated by Minus18 presenters Seb and Tessa. Seb and Tessa aim to create a positive, safe and judgement-free learning environment for all participants where questions are always welcomed.

The course will cover:

  • A quick refresher on foundational LGBTIQA+ concepts and identities
  • School-based scenarios
  • Practical tools to support LGBTQIA+ students and staff in the classroom and throughout the whole school
  • LGBTQIA+ lived-experiences via our expert workshop presenters as they talk about their personal journeys being LGBTQIA+
  • Information about further support from the SA Department for Education and other services
