Course Outline

The FRESH Course (Youth and Community Services Focus) provides workers with an opportunity to share learning and build their confidence around sexual and reproductive health. The course utilises adult learning techniques, encouraging participation and activity based learning.

Course topics include:

  • Introduction to sexual health
  • Attitudes to sex and sexuality
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Sexually transmissible infections (STIs)
  • Contraception
  • Pregnancy options
  • Consent and sexual violence
  • Sex and the law
  • Sexual and gender diversity
  • Resources

On completion of the FRESH course, you will have:

  • an increased level of confidence working with clients in the area of sexual health
  • a better understanding of how values and beliefs may influence your practice in this area of work
  • a new vocabulary about sexual health and relationships to use when talking with your clients
  • practical skills to address clients’ sexual health needs through assessment, program development, delivery and evaluation
  • become familiar with current resources available and how to use them effectively with clients to explore the many areas of sexuality and sexual health

Depending on the priorities of the group, some content may be negotiated with the Course Coordinator, and some learning tasks may be offered online instead of face-to-face.

Organisations, groups or individuals who are interested in the FRESH course but are unable to attend those already scheduled are encouraged to contact SHINE SA to discuss the possibility of tailored training. SHINE SA is able to offer training sessions of varied length and content for interested parties according to their needs. Fees will be negotiated directly with the training organisers.

This course, developed for professionals, defines and explains all the options available to people experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. It is open to nurses, midwives, doctors, counsellors, community health workers, school counsellors, youth workers, Aboriginal Health Workers, and any professional who encounters clients with unplanned pregnancy.
