Cervical Screening Provider Course

This interactive course will cover the knowledge and skills necessary to become a Cervical Screening Provider.

The Cervical Screening Provider Course is an interactive program covering the theoretical and clinical knowledge needed to become a Cervical Screening Provider.

This course (formerly the Pap Smear Provider Course) has been developed in conjunction with the SA Cervix Screening Program. It includes an online learning module and assessment, a face-to-face theory workshop and optional clinical component. Participants who work within a general practice or community health service and who require cervical screening skills as part of their practice will benefit most from the course.

Course Outline

Participants in the theory component will:

  • develop a deeper understanding of the National Cervical Screening Program guidelines
  • learn how to approach consultation and opportunistic STI testing
  • engage with practical learning demonstrations
  • develop clinical skills with the support of a Sexual Health Teaching Associate

The theory component comprises an online learning module and an 8 hour face-to-face workshop. It is compulsory to complete the online assessment prior to attendance at the workshop. The workshop includes National Cervical Screening Program guidelines, consultation, opportunistic STI testing and clinical skills development with a Sexual Health Teaching Associate.

Medical Practitioners

Medical practitioners may elect to complete the theory training only but may also benefit from completing the clinical component.

Approval as a Cervical Screening Provider involves the development and assessment of clinical skills and competencies, history taking, assessment and follow-up. It is a 2-phase process lasting approximately 4 months:

PHASE 1: Developing Provisional Competency: Must be completed within 4 weeks of attendance at the workshop unless otherwise negotiated. Provisional Competency is usually achieved through 5-8 supervised Cervical Screening Tests.

Participants can elect to complete Phase 1:

EITHER through a SHINE SA placement* OR with a SHINE SA approved Cervical Screening Preceptor (read the below information on the program). Participants electing clinical placement at SHINE SA must have Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII) and a current Child-Related Employment Screening.

*Two clinic sessions at SHINE SA, which may be over one or two days. Clinical placement at SHINE SA is limited to 4 participants per scheduled course.

Phase 1 is immediately followed by:

PHASE 2: Consolidation of Competency as Cervical Screening Provider: Workplace-mentored cervical screening practice for 3 months and submission of documentation (15-20 CSTs) for quality assurance monitoring and assessment.

Completion of Phase 2 must occur within 6 months of the Theory workshop unless by written agreement with the course coordinator.

Registered nurses and midwives experienced in cervical screening are invited to apply to be Cervical Screening Preceptors for course participants developing Provisional Competency.

The approval process for Cervical Screening Preceptors requires demonstration of advanced cervical screening practice and undertaking a brief self-paced online training program (approx. 1 hour).

Cervical Screening Preceptors will receive a certificate of recognition.

To register as a Cervical Screening Preceptor, please complete and return the application form: Cervical Screening Preceptor Application RN/RM
