Cervical Screening Credentialling Program

SHine SA’s Cervical Screening Credentialling Program (formerly the Pap Smear Provider Course) was developed in conjunction with the SA Cervix Screening Program.

The course is suitable for registered nurses/midwives, doctors and enrolled nurses. Participants who work within a general practice or who require Pap smear taking skills as part of their practice will benefit most from the course.

Course Cost

Theory only: $510

Theory and clinical at SHine SA: $850

Theory and clinical in your own workplace with a SHine SA Approved Pap Preceptor: $650

Course Outline

Eligibility criteria:

  • This course is suitable for registered nurses/midwives, doctors and enrolled nurses working in general practice or primary health, and is intended for ongoing cervical screening practice.
  • Applicants must have current registration with AHPRA.

The program consists of theory and clinical components:

The theory component comprises an online learning package and an 8.5 hour face-to-face workshop. It is compulsory to complete the online assessment prior to attendance at the workshop. The workshop includes consultation, opportunistic STI testing and clinical skills development with a Gynaecological Teaching Associate.

Cervical Screening Credentialling involves the development and assessment of clinical skills and competencies, history taking, assessment and follow-up. It is a 2-phase process lasting approximately 3 months:

Phase 1: Must be completed within 4 weeks of attendance at the workshop unless otherwise negotiated. Cervical screening clinical training (8 supervised Pap smears) after the face-to-face theory workshop,

EITHER at SHine SA* OR with a SHine SA approved Cervical Screening Preceptor. Participants electing clinical placement at SHine SA must have Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII).


Phase 2: Workplace-mentored cervical screening practice for 3 months and submission of documentation for quality assurance monitoring and assessment.

Completion of Phase 2 must occur within 6 months of the Theory workshop unless by written agreement with the course coordinator.

*2 clinic sessions at SHine SA, which may be over one or two days.

Registered Nurses and Midwives experienced in cervical screening are invited to apply to be Cervical Screening Preceptors for course participants, supervising clinical practice in developing Provisional Competency.

The approval process for Cervical Screening Preceptors requires demonstration of advanced cervical screening practice and undertaking a brief self-paced online training program (approx. 1 hour).

Cervical Screening Preceptors will receive recognition and invitations to free exclusive professional development by SHine SA and SA Cervix Screening Program.
