Certificate in Sexual Health & CPD Modules

The Certificate in Sexual Health comprises a theory component and an optional clinical placement. Theory modules blend online interactive content and face-to-face workshops. These modules may also be undertaken individually as Continuing Professional Development (CPD). The Core Concepts module is a pre-requisite to all other modules.

Note: Compulsory online pre-reading and activities are assessed prior to attendance at the workshops.

Course Outline

The theory modules are:

  • Core Concepts in Sexual Health (pre-requisite: must be completed prior to other modules)
  • Reproductive Health
  • Breast Health and Gynaecology
  • Introduction to Sexual Health Counselling
  • Andrology, Urology and Related Conditions
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections and Blood-Borne Viruses

Eligibility criteria: Current unrestricted AHPRA registration as a registered nurse or midwife and two years full-time (or equivalent) post-registration experience.

Pre-requisite: Detailed knowledge of female and male reproductive anatomy and physiology.

Assessment: Successful completion of the theory component requires online reading and assessments and full attendance for all module workshops within a 12-month period.

The optional clinical placement aims to consolidate the theory component and prepare Registered Nurses and Midwives to become skilled in the area of sexual health. Non-judgmental, sensitive and inclusive care is modelled while developing competence in clinical procedures. Graduates also develop skills in individual client education and will have access to comprehensive information and resources.

The 54 hours clinical placement over a 2-3 week period will be negotiated on an individual basis for successful applicants. Leave from the applicant’s workplace may need to be arranged to enable this placement.

Experienced sexual health RN/Ms provide mentorship throughout the placement, which uses the ASHNNA competencies for assessment.

Eligibility criteria: The Certificate in Sexual Health theory component or recognised equivalent must be completed within the preceding 12 months. Clinical placements are prioritised for those who work in a related area, with SHINE SA’s communities of interest, or have demonstrated a commitment to sexual health nursing/midwifery. Acceptance into the clinical component is via individual application and cannot be guaranteed. Participants must have Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII).

Assessment:

  • Pre-clinical review assessment and development of personal learning objectives
  • Clinical Portfolio: assessment of specific practice skills and ASHHNA competencies
  • Post-clinical reflective practice assignment

The theory modules may also be undertaken individually as Continuing Professional Development. A statement of attendance with CPD hours will be issued following successful completion. Your preferred module selections can be made when you enrol. Note: Core Concepts is a mandatory module as it is a pre-requisite to all other modules.
