In South Australia the program is delivered by SHine SA – building on our proud history of working with schools to reduce homophobia and transphobia and to deliver an inclusive relationships and sexual health curriculum through the Focus Schools program.
Australian research shows that young people are still experiencing high levels of homophobia and transphobia in our schools, and that teachers are often unsure of how to respond and what actions to take. There are simple ways schools can proactively reduce related prejudice and discrimination, and ensure students feel safe, valued and connected to their school community. This is essential for all students for health, wellbeing and ongoing engagement in education.
This program takes a whole school approach to support all staff to understand their role in creating safe and inclusive learning environments. It goes beyond the classroom to look at school policy, practice, the school environment and student leadership opportunities.
There is a range of free support available for all schools across all education sectors including:
Many South Australian schools are successfully supporting gender diverse and transgender students to be their true selves at school. The Safe Schools Coalition SA program can provide advice and support to help schools who may be unsure of what they can and should do to provide a safe and inclusive learning environment for gender diverse and transgender students.
