Safety in Our Schools: Responding to Homophobia

Australian national research shows that 8-11% of young people are not exclusively heterosexual. Due to homophobia and heterosexism, the vast majority of same-sex attracted young people do not feel safe or included at school.

A national report on sexuality, health and wellbeing of same-sex attracted young people (2010) found that:

  • 61% of young people reported verbal abuse because of homophobia
  • 18% of young people reported physical abuse because of homophobia
  • 80% of all the abuse happened at school

Schools have a responsibility to provide a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students.

Safety in Our Schools: Responding to Homophobia is a training program looking at the impact of homophobia on same-sex attracted young people and how a whole school approach to reducing homophobia can make a difference.

If you are interested in having a course run in your school or require support to address homophobia and create a safe and inclusive learning environment for your whole school community, please contact Helen Rawnsley, SHine SA on 8300 5353 or helen.rawnsley@health.sa.gov.au
