Pap Smear Provider Course
SHine SA, in conjunction with SA Cervix Screening Program, has developed a Pap Smear Provider Course. This course is supported by South Australian Division of General Practice and ensures that the nurse is appropriately qualified and trained to take a Pap smear in a general practice setting.
This course is most suitable for registered nurses and midwives who are working within a general practice that requires Pap smear taking skills as part of their clinical practice.
Note: Completion of the SHine SA Certificate in Sexual Health (clinical component) provides competency in Pap smear taking.
Program consists of:
- pre-workshop readings and workbook
- one-day theoretical workshop including practical skills development
- clinical placement of 8-12 hours (undertaken within 2 months of the workshop) at SHine SA or with a SHine SA approved external preceptor, to enable participants to attain provisional competency for 3 months
- evaluation of the provisional competency period at 3 months, to attain certificate of competency
Written support from the employer/doctor is required to assure the participant's ongoing Pap smear practice for consolidation of skills.

Time: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
Cost: $300 (Course fees will be increased in June 2012, affecting all courses in the 2012–13 financial year.)
Extra clinical sessions are available for $50 each.
Other workshops, especially in rural areas, can be negotiated by need and attendants.
