Disability workers

SHine SA provides a range of opportunities for:

  • agencies to increase their existing workers' knowledge and skills in the area of sexual and reproductive health and relationships

  • students of disability work to prepare themselves for the sexuality and relationship needs of their future clients

SHine SA offers:

  • FRESH (FReedom to Explore Sexual Health) course: The FRESH course has a flexible design which offers a stream for disability workers.

FRESH course (FReedom to Explore Sexual Health)

The FRESH course is a nationally recognised course with a flexible design which offers a stream for disability workers. FRESH has a Core of 3 days and a series of electives and optional assessment-based modules.

Agency-based tailored training in sexuality and disability

SHine SA is committed to helping disability agencies improve their capacity to support the sexual health and relationships of their clientele. Workshop programs from 4 to 20 hours can be negotiated. Content commonly includes exploration of beliefs and assumptions; responding ethically to client needs through examining relevant case studies; and introduction to a range of communication resources and exercises. Ideally, any tailored training provided by SHine SA will be planned and delivered collaboratively with persons in leadership positions within the disability agency as a capacity-building exercise.

Organisations that have used this service in the recent past include: Arts Access; Community Living for the Disabled; DECS Respite Care Program; Epilepsy Centre; Flinders University Disability and Rehabilitation Studies; Life's for Living; Mental Illness Fellowship SA; Metro Access (UCWPA); Homelink (UCWA); Uniting Care Wesley; Royal Society for the Blind; SA Sex Industry Network; and disability support networks in regional areas.

Cost & Payment Method: $75 per hour - invoiced after training is delivered.

 

Accommodating Sexuality and Human Relations workshop

SHine SA provides a one-day introductory sexuality and disability training workshop to students of certificate courses in Disability Care Work. Students of Aged Care may also benefit. Some Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) refer students to this workshop as an elective in their program. Full assessment services are not offerred for this workshop, but SHine SA suggests a small list of tasks which can be assessed by RTO staff as a post-workshop assignment. The primary competency standard which relates to this area of training is:

  • CHCICS303A: Support individual health and emotional wellbeing, which has a Performance Criteria Element: 6. Recognise and accommodate the client’s expressions of identity and sexuality.

Pregnancy Choices Training 

This course, developed for professionals, defines and explains all the options available to women experiencing an unplanned pregnancy. It is open to nurses, doctors, counsellors, community health workers, school counsellors, youth workers, indigenous health workers, and any professional who encounters clients with unplanned pregnancy.
