Certificate in Sexual Health for Registered Nurses and Midwives

This interactive 5-day course for registered nurses and midwives supports a comprehensive understanding of sexual and reproductive health.

Course Outline

The Certificate in Sexual Health equips nurses and midwives with detailed knowledge and clinical skills in sexual and reproductive health. The Certificate in Sexual Health – Theory provides an intensive learning program with a broad range of sexual and reproductive health topics.

Participants have two options in completion:

  • Certificate in Sexual Health – Theory
  • Certificate in Sexual Health – Theory and Clinical Placement

Certificate in Sexual Health – Theory

The Certificate in Sexual Health – Theory includes online learning modules and a 5-day face-to-face course and a post course open book exam. The compulsory online learning modules need to be completed and assessed prior to attending the face-to-face course. These activities are provided one month prior to attendance. The post course open book exam must be completed within 4 weeks.

Topics covered include:

  • Core Concepts in Sexual Health
  • Reproductive Health
  • Breast Health and Gynaecology
  • Andrology, Urology and Related Conditions
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections and Blood-Borne Viruses

The Certificate in Sexual Health Theory will be awarded once the course has been attended and the open book exam has successfully been completed.

To be eligible for the theoretical component you must have:

  • current unrestricted registration with AHPRA as a registered nurse or midwife
  • a minimum of two years full-time (or equivalent) post-registration experience
  • detailed knowledge of reproductive anatomy and physiology

The optional clinical placement aims to consolidate the theory component and prepare registered nurses and midwives to become skilled beginner Sexual Health Nurses. Non-judgmental, sensitive and inclusive care is modelled while developing competence in clinical procedures. Graduates also develop skills in individual client education and will have access to comprehensive information and resources.

The clinical placement equates to 6 days which may be offered as full or half day sessions. This will occur over a 2–3-week period and will be negotiated on an individual basis for successful applicants. Leave from the applicant’s workplace may need to be arranged to enable this placement.

Experienced sexual health RN/Ms provide mentorship throughout the placement, which uses the   ASHHNA competencies for assessment.

Acceptance into the clinical component is via individual application and cannot be guaranteed.

Assessment of the clinical component includes:

  • pre-clinical review assessment and development of personal learning objectives
  • clinical portfolio: assessment of specific practice skills and ASHHNA competencies
  • post-clinical reflective practice assignment

To be eligible for the clinical training sessions you must:

  • have completed the Certificate in Sexual Health theory component or recognised equivalent with a minimum 70% grade within the preceding 12 months
  • currently work in a setting that allows immediate application of skills
  • have Professional Indemnity Insurance
  • current DCSI child related screening

Clinical placements are prioritised for those who work in a related area with SHINE SA’s communities of interest, or have demonstrated a commitment to sexual health nursing/midwifery.
